So We're Chip Sealing Your Street

‘Chip seal’ put simply is a resurfacing method used to maintain and repair asphalt roads. This is just one of several ‘seal coating’ methods that involves milling the worn-down top layer of asphalt and replacing it with a newer more durable surface.

WHY DOES THE CITY CHIP SEAL’?

Asphalt naturally deteriorates due to weather exposure and everyday traffic. Chip sealing helps minimize oxidation of the roadway. Oxidation causes the surface to dry out which increases its ability to absorb moisture. Moisture in the roadway will expand and contract through seasonal freeze/thaw cycles - leading to cracks and deterioration that results in potholes and fractured pavement. In short, it's one of the most affordable methods of extending the life of our City streets. As another benefit, it also provides better traction in winter.

WHEN DOES THE CITY CHIP SEAL?

The City is currently composed of eight Maintenance Zones and the City of Twin Falls focuses street maintenance - as well as other utility work and maintenance - on one of the eight Maintenance Zones each year.

WHY ARE NEWER ROADWAYS CHIP SEALED?

A properly applied chip seal can add several years of service to a roadway. The road surface may not be as appealing as it once was, but chip seal extends the longevity of the road and prevents further damage like potholes and cracking. Our Street Department also continuously monitors the pavement conditions on City-owned and maintained roadways, and will make necessary repairs as needed.

Check out the maps showing which roads fall under the City’s jurisdiction versus the Twin Falls Highway District (TFHD) and the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD).

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP

ON-STREET PARKING:

During the chip sealing process, on-street parking may be temporarily restricted. "No Parking" signs will be placed in impacted areas. We ask for your patience and cooperation during this time to help improve our roadways.

AVOID ROCK CHIPS IN WINDSHIELDS & PAINT:

Follow posted speed limits and increase your following distance to reduce the risk of windshield damage caused by loose chips. Windshield damage is often caused by impatient drivers going too fast, causing their tires to spray rocks indiscriminately at other vehicles.

WHAT TO DO BEFORE CHIP SEALING:

Trim trees/shrubs near the curb. Trees must be at least 13’6” above the street and clear of the sidewalk. Adjust your irrigation times to between 6 p.m. and 2 a.m. Moisture on the pavement inhibits the oil from fully adhering to the roadway.

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT CHIP SEALING PROCESS

STEPS FOR CHIP SEALING:

  • Liquid asphalt (emulsion) & Chips are applied to the road surface.
  • Surface is rolled immediately for compaction. (To help chips adhere to the road.)
  • Excess chips are swept up in the days following application.
  • Roadways are restriped with paint and/or thermoplastics.

CONDITIONS FOR MOST EFFECTIVE CHIP SEAL:

Temperature: 50 degrees Fahrenheit and rising.

Cloud Cover: None.

Wind Speed: 10 mph or less.

Weather: Sunny or mostly sunny days (to facilitate oil curing).
