Contractors with the City of Twin Falls will begin installing rock-fall barriers and other equipment for the Canyon Springs Grade reconstruction project beginning Wednesday, May 29. The grade will be temporarily closed to all pedestrians and cyclists beginning Wednesday, and vehicle traffic will be reduced to one shared lane.
Signs have been posted at the top and bottom of the grade to inform pedestrians and cyclists about the closure. Temporary traffic lights have also been installed to alternate vehicle traffic on the shared lane.
The $1.7 million Canyon Springs Grade reconstruction project is the result of nearly three years of public input, community planning, and stakeholder interviews to make the Canyon Springs Grade safe for motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists.
Falling rock and a narrow roadway that is used by a growing number of vehicles and pedestrians has created hazardous conditions. In 2015, a Citizen Advisory Committee was appointed by the City Council to gather public input and recommend potential solutions. And in January 2017, the Council accepted one of the Committee’s recommendations to reconstruct the existing grade and widen the roadway where possible, as well as to install anchors and steel mesh to contain falling rock.
