The Twin Falls Police Department will begin the first Twin Falls Bike Rodeo at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 7 at Canyon Ridge High School. The Bike Rodeo will bring together several community partners in what is expected to be an annual event that teaches bike safety to youth in the City of Twin Falls.
With the City of Twin Falls’ 2030 Strategic Plan initiative to connect and expand existing trails and encourage citizens to utilize sustainable modes of transportation such as bicycles, the police department is leading a community effort to teach bike safety to its youngest citizens. The Bike Rodeo will be held in the parking lot of Canyon Ridge High School located at 300 North College Road West. It will provide a safe and fun atmosphere where youth can challenge their riding skills on an obstacle course and learn basic rules of the road.
Community partners such as Clif Bar & Company, Chobani, Epic Ride Cyclery, Cycle Therapy, Spoke and Wheel, Kiwi Loco, Chick Fila and McDonalds have teamed up to help sponsor the event with loads of prizes – including a new bicycle – and other items for kids and their parents to take home. Canyon Ridge High School’s Student Body Council and Business Professionals of America will assist with many of the activities. Magic Valley Safe Kids will have new helmets available for a $5 donation.
“This is truly a community event that was made possible because of many local partners who want to teach and promote safe cycling in Twin Falls,” said Officer Matt Triner, Twin Falls Police Department. “As we encourage our citizens to do more cycling for recreation and transportation, it will be more important for our City to provide youth with the knowledge and skillset to safely enjoy it.”
The Bike Rodeo will include a bicycle safety course that will challenge young cyclists’ ability to maintain control while maneuvering around obstacles. Experienced cyclists will be available to provide tips and training on safe handling. In addition, local bike shops will teach hand signals and show youth how to conduct safety check on their bicycles. Participants are asked to bring their own bicycle and helmet.
The City of Twin Falls and Twin Falls City Council would like to encourage all youth and their parents to attend this free event.
