Contractors with the City of Twin Falls will be resurfacing city streets in northeast Twin Falls beginning Monday, June 22 through Thursday, July 2. During this time, contractors will Friction Seal most residential streets in the area from Kimberly Road to Stadium Boulevard, and from Hankins Road to Eastland Drive.

Friction Seal is a newer street treatment that sprays Gilsonite oil and a layer of fine crushed aggregate. Gilsonite is a naturally occurring resinous asphalt ore that has been used for more than 25 years. The treatment does not require sweeping, does not leave behind loose rock, has a short cure time of about two hours, and provides a substantial seal to extend the life of the roadway.
Streets that will be Friction Sealed must be clear of all vehicles and obstructions. Twin Falls residents will be notified at least 24 hours before their street is closed for Friction Sealing. Door hangers will also be posted on homes to inform residents when their street will be sealed.
Friction Sealing is preferred for newer residential streets because it does not leave behind loose rock – or chip – and provides a smooth, black surface. Chip SealChip seal is applied by spraying a heavy coating of emulsified asphalt oil onto a road surface and then covering the oil with rock. Rollers are then used to embed the rock into the oil, forming a new wearing surface. A chip seal is applied when the pavement deterioration is greater than what a slurry, friction, and fog seal is designed to correct, but has not deteriorated to the point of requiring an expensive asphalt replacement. Fog SealFog seal is the application of a thin layer of emulsified asphalt to the existing surface, which seals narrow cracks, restores pavement flexibility, and most importantly restores the underlying pavement structure. Fog seal is generally applied to newer streets that do not require more significant methods such as Chip, Slurry, and Friction Seal.
