[ARCHIVED] City of Twin Falls to Begin Scheduled Street Resurfacing Projects

Friction Seal

Contractors with the City of Twin Falls will be resurfacing city streets in northeast Twin Falls beginning Monday, June 22 through Thursday, July 2. During this time, contractors will Friction Seal most residential streets in the area from Kimberly Road to Stadium Boulevard, and from Hankins Road to Eastland Drive.

A complete list of streets to be Friction Sealed is available on the City website here [LINK]. And a map of the streets is available here [LINK].

Friction Seal is a newer street treatment that sprays Gilsonite oil and a layer of fine crushed aggregate. Gilsonite is a naturally occurring resinous asphalt ore that has been used for more than 25 years. The treatment does not require sweeping, does not leave behind loose rock, has a short cure time of about two hours, and provides a substantial seal to extend the life of the roadway.

Streets that will be Friction Sealed must be clear of all vehicles and obstructions. Twin Falls residents will be notified at least 24 hours before their street is closed for Friction Sealing. Door hangers will also be posted on homes to inform residents when their street will be sealed.

Friction Sealing is preferred for newer residential streets because it does not leave behind loose rock – or chip – and provides a smooth, black surface. See below to learn more about seal coat methods utilized by the City of Twin Falls. Questions about the Friction Seal, and other City street resurfacing projects, please contact the City of Twin Falls Public Works Department at 208-736-2226.

Chip Seal

Chip seal is applied by spraying a heavy coating of emulsified asphalt oil onto a road surface and then covering the oil with rock. Rollers are then used to embed the rock into the oil, forming a new wearing surface. A chip seal is applied when the pavement deterioration is greater than what a slurry, friction, and fog seal is designed to correct, but has not deteriorated to the point of requiring an expensive asphalt replacement.

Fog Seal

Fog seal is the application of a thin layer of emulsified asphalt to the existing surface, which seals narrow cracks, restores pavement flexibility, and most importantly restores the underlying pavement structure. Fog seal is generally applied to newer streets that do not require more significant methods such as Chip, Slurry, and Friction Seal.

About Seal Coat Projects

The City of Twin Falls applies chip, slurry, friction, and fog sealing each year during the summer months to extend the life of asphalt roads and minimize long-term costs. The City follows a Zone Maintenance schedule that consolidates maintenance projects and minimizes the impact on residents. The Zoned Maintenance Map is available on the City of Twin Falls website at TFID.ORG

Important Notice to Motorists

Please do not drive on streets that have been sealed and are closed. Please follow detours that are put in place to keep vehicles off uncured streets, and park vehicles off the roadway until cured. Thank you!
