[ARCHIVED] Twin Falls City Mayor's Minute

Suzanne Hawkins

I find myself struggling for words. For the past eight weeks I have been writing ‘A Minute with the Mayor’ articles for the Times-News. It is easy to share all the good news and great work from the City of Twin Falls. There is so much good here! This week, however, I find it a little more difficult to focus on the positive.

There is such a feeling of heaviness hanging in the beautiful Spring air. My heart physically hurts for all of those in our community as well as our Nation who are reliving their own personal hardships as we mourn the senseless death of George Floyd.

This has been a week of soul-searching for me. I know what I believe, my core values. I know that we are to love each other. We are to treat others the way we want to be treated. We are to be selfless, putting others needs and feelings ahead of our own. We are to respect authority. As I force myself to stop “being busy” and truly look at my life, I have to ask myself, have I really lived what I believe?  My prayer is for a new start.  Remembering our history while forgiving, healing and learning.

The Prayer of St. Francis

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace,
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
Where there is sadness, joy;

O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek
To be consoled as to console;
To be understood as to understand;
To be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive;
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Like all humans I am clay in the potter’s hands. Being molded and reshaped continually. Trying always to do and be better than the day before. I may not fully understand the path others have walked, but I care. The good and positive news I want to leave you with this week, is that change is possible. Growth hurts, but the end reward is worth the discomfort of today. Stay Twin Falls Strong – Shining Brightly.
