New Year, new birth, physical assessments and a new training program have kept the fire department busy this month. Before I go any further I need to give a big congratulations to Fire Fighter Sean Burgess and his wife Kara on the birth of their new baby girl, Italy. Italy was born January 8th at 1:00 am, mom and baby are healthy and doing great.

The New Year has brought about a new training program for the TFFD boys. The new program will focus on the core curriculum of our Essentials of Fire Fighting training manuals. These manuals are currently used in the Fire Fighter Level one, two, and three programs. This new system will get everyone, from the first year fire fighter to the 25 year veteran captain, training on and using the newest fire fighting techniques being taught in our currently issued Essentials Manual. Each person will be responsible for one month of training a year for their individual shift. Every month has been assigned a training topic and with the rotating schedule each person will be in charge of a different topic every year. Having everyone on the same page will make emergency scenes run that much smoother.

Recently the Twin Falls Fire Fighters Association sent Driver Eric Schmitz to Peer Fitness training. Eric is now certified to perform physical assessments on the fire fighters. The results of the assessments can tell us what we need to work on and in what areas we are strong. The plan, we hope, is to participate in these tests on a yearly basis to see what we've improved on or where we've fallen short over the past year. This program will make for healthier and younger looking fire fighters, well healthier for sure.

So that's about it for this month, until next time stay safe and don't forget to wave to the guys in the BRT.

Fire Safety Tip: Make sure all family members know what to do in the event of a fire. Draw a floor plan with at least two ways of escaping every room. Make a drawing for each floor. Dimensions do not need to be correct. Make sure the plan shows important details: stairs, hallways and windows that can be used as fire escape routes.
